During data collection, we frequently optimize ease and efficiency of data entry, producing files that are not well formatted or described for longer term uses, perhaps assuming in the moment that the details of our experiments and observations would be impossible to forget. We can make the best of our sometimes embarrassing data management errors by using them as ‘teachable moments’, opening our dusty file drawers to explore the most common errors, and some quick fixes to improve day-to-day approaches to data.

Over the past 350 years those values were weakened and lost as scaling issues made them impractical. Do the internet and the web offer a solution to these problems? And if so, how can we develop communities and infrastructures that combine the best of the values of the early Royal Society with our more modern values of diversity, inclusion and equality?

  The shift to a digital context has transformed scientific communication deeply. The rapid and enormous growth in computing power has also led science itself to approach reality in new ways. Both trends stand behind the rise of open science and open data. The Open Access movement has already transformed the publishing of research results: new business models, new forms of dissemination, new retrieval tools, and new preservation strategies. It is also beginning to affect the ways in which scientific work is being evaluated.
